Teaching WordPress and SEO on Fiverr is a great experience for me. In the past five years, I tried teaching on various online platforms, which all have advantages and downsides. Fiverr is not an exception. Although it has a broad base of potential users, they are a heterogeny group. You can meet anyone from a complete beginner to an expert, all with a different perception of their actual knowledge.
Fortunately, my experience gives me a tool to recognize each type of student and adapt my classes accordingly. It seems that students have a similar experience to me. In the two years of my Fiverr teaching gig, I have had 106 reviews, with 105 rated five and one rated four stars. Not bad.
My experience so far
Recently, one student asked me if I had some bad experiences teaching on Fiver. I can not say that I had. So far, I have found a common language and approach with every customer. My biggest problem is that people often do not have enough time to commit to the class schedule. Therefore, they do not show up at the scheduled time.
It is a dilemma what to do in the circumstances like those. Often students have a valid reason to miss classes. Sometimes however, they just decide that they want to do something else instead.
Fiverr is not helping sellers (teachers in this case) because your success depends on whether the Buyer must accept or not object to your delivery. It means that if you did not have the class, you have not delivered the service, no matter whose fault it is. Unlike “real” teaching platforms, where “no show” is a fault of the person who did not attend the class, Fiverr is always on Buyer to accept the delivery at his terms.
The best Fiverr can do if the student fails to show up to the class and the delivery deadline is near is to cancel the gig without consequences to any side. Of course, that also means that if you held three classes and could not hold two, Fiverr will not pay for any of those. Not really fair.
On the bright side
Apart from that minor inconvenience (it happened maybe 2-3 times out of more than 100 clients), I genuinely enjoy classes, as most students are very eager to learn and are truly committed to classes. Most of them are also recurring customers, and I have developed some kind of relationship with them, so I am always pleased to meet them again and again.
We do all our classes on Zoom; if a student provides the link, he can also record the sessions. They find it useful as they can later review the lessons if they missed anything.
I am truly happy to be able to do teaching online as it fulfills me intellectually and emotionally. I like seeing that students are satisfied and that the progress is easily visible. All in all, I find this activity both exciting and relaxing, which is a great combination.
